Help online for Webstat

The basics concerning the use of Webstat, the Banque de France’s statistical portal.

What is Webstat?

Webstat is the Banque de France’s statistical portal; it contains about 35 000 series of Banque de France and partner international organisations (of which ECB, Eurostat).

  • Webstat allows you to search for statistical series, to compare and display them in different views: charts, tables and individually.
  • You can also export them by downloading them for use in any spreadsheet of your choice.
  • Finally, with your personal space, find your series at any time and receive update notifications.

Create a personal space

In order to create your personal space, you will need only an email address.

  1. Click on the Login pictogram.
  2. In the form “New on Webstat” enter your email.
  3. Then, fill in the control code and validate the form by clicking on Register.
  4. Open the mail sent by Webstat to your email address et click on the link in order to activate your account.
  5. Your personal space is created!

Find a series

You can locate a series in two lain ways: by navigating through the thematic menu or by using the search engine in the upper right of your screen.

View a series

The series can be consulted in three ways: as a list (series of the same theme), as a table with an overview of the data or as a chart (several possible representations: line, column, sector, map, etc.). Each series can be viewed in detail in a specific sheet presenting its values and metadata.

Export a series

A series or group of series with their data can be exported to a file to allow reuse outside Webstat; spreadsheet (CSV or Excel) and XML formats are supported. This function is available in each screen with series.

Publication calendar

A calendar of statistical publications, including Stat Infos, is available from the home page to view upcoming and past publications. It is possible to access the publications content from the calendar.

Be informed of updates

Updates of sets of series appear in chronological order in the « Updates » section of the main tree structure. It is also possible to be informed in real time of the updates by adding the series in your personal space and activating the e-mail notification feature.

Webstat supports the SDMX format, the ISO standard for exchanging statistical data, allowing a statistical series to be linked to harmonised statistical concepts.

Home page

Welcome to the Banque de France's Webstat statistical portal, which will give you access to more than 30,000 time series from an interactive database.

From this screen you can initiate your navigation through the portal:

  • Tree structure: access the series you are looking for by different classification axes

-      Economic concepts (thematic research),

-      Series associated with publications (Stat Info, thematic publications and main economic and financial indicators),

-      Eurosystem statistics

  • Search bar: search your series by entering keywords,
  • Quick access: Use the quick accesses contained in this page to access the statistical sections by theme,
  • My series: create your personal space to follow the series you are interested in.

Intermediate Navigation

Navigation page

The navigation pages allow you to view and navigate through the sub-sections of the tree structure:

  • Burgundy block: allows you to return to the parent heading in the tree structure,
  • Green block: a navigable sub-section of the current heading,
  • Blue block: allows the consultation of the series composing the sub-section.

Data Selection

Series page

The Series screen allows you to view the series contained in a sub-section of the tree structure.

Main features :

  • Series: list of series on the current page; tick the ones you are interested in and select a graphical preview, table or preview,
  • Common concepts: overview of all dimensions common to the selected series,
  • Sort by: reorganizes the display of series,
  • Filters: advanced filtering allowing you to restrict the perimeter of the series to be displayed,
  • Export: exports the series in CSV, XML or PDF format,
  • Chart: displays the series in a chart,
  • Table: displays the series in table format,
  • Info: displays the metadata of the series,

Favourite: add the series to your Personal Space to find them more easily during your next visit (star pictogram).

Data Chart

Chart page

This page allows you to view the series you want in graphical form.

Main features :

  • Consultation: displays the chart of the selected series,
  • Time range: restricts the range of data visualisation,
  • Transformation: applies a predefined formula (e. g. variation over a period of time) to transform the data,
  • Other graphical types: displays the series under another graphical representation (column, sector, geo map...),
  • Stack/Unstack: overlays the selected series to better compare them,
  • Export: exports the chart in PDF or image format.

Data Table

Table page

This page allows you to view the series in table format.

Main features:

  • Consultation: consult the series table on the page,
  • Time range: restrict the range of data visualisation,
  • Transformation: applies a predefined formula (e. g. variation over a period of time) to transform the data,
  • Transposition: switches the display of the series (returned arrow pictogram),

Export: exports the series in spreadsheet, PDF or XML format.

Overview page

This page allows you to view the information in a serie (data and metadata).

Main features:

  •  Consultation: displays the metadata of the series ( "Overview" tab), its chart and its observation data ( "Data" tab)
  • Time range: restricts the range of data visualisation,
  • Transformation: applies a predefined formula (e. g. variation over a period of time) to transform the data,
  • Other graphical types: presents the series in another graphical presentation (default line, or column, sector, ...),
  • Export: exports data in spreadsheet or PDF format,

Favourite: add the series to your personal Space.

Search results

Search results

This page allows you to display series resulting from your search

Main features:

  • Reorganise: the selected series appear on top of the list,
  • Location: displays the access path of the series within the thematic classification tree (left block of the screen),

Export: exports the series in PDF or XML format.

Use of special characters in the search bar:

  • Wildcard characters:

The question mark « ? » replaces a unique character.

The asterisk « * » replaces a string from 0 to n characters.

Both types of wildcards can be associated in the same search.

  • Sample search :

By searching EXR.D.?KK.EUR.SP00.A, we obtain EXR.D.DKK.EUR.SP00.A (Danish krone rate) et EXR.D.SKK.EUR.SP00.A (Slovak koruna rate).

By searching EXR.M.*.A, we obtain all the monthly series of the EXR dataset averaged over the period.

Info page

This page allows you to understand the series coding methodology (in SDMX format).

Main features:

  • Dataset information: details the series code by statistical concept,
  •  Series information: displays the metadata associated with each series (title, unit, magnitude …).

Advanced Filter

Filters page:

This page allows you to select the series you are interested in through thematic filters.

Main features:

  • Dimensions: Select the dimensions you are interested in to restrict your selection of series

Download area

Access the series packaged by downloadable block (in CSV, Excel or XML format if necessary).

The search can be carried out:

  • through the drop-down lists Heading, Theme, Sub-theme, which filter the downloads offered according to your choices
  • via the search engine integrated in the restitution table

A pictogram in the form of an archive box (or an explicit label) indicates archived series.

Box page

Your series are grouped here by boxes.

Use each box by using its menu to apply a custom filter to the contents of the box:

  • Check an entry in a sub-menu to apply the choice,
  • Choices within a sub-menu are cumulative,
  • Choices between different menus intersect

When a choice is applied, a label appears in the box reminding of the active filter. This label can be removed to remove the filter.
